The Economist wanted to upgrade 20-year-old tech to meet 2024 standards, aiming to deliver better customer insights in innovative ways. The challenge lay in scaling, as existing revenues didn’t justify a large tech team. They sought a deep technologist with expertise in AI, forecasting models, and data modelling, who could also manage high-level stakeholders, including the CEO and board.
The ideal candidate needed experience in distributing data at scale, and understanding how to leverage proprietary data for enterprise sales. They wanted someone with hands-on technical skills, capable of mentoring and engaging deeply with architects and principals.
We mapped the career paths of leaders from large B2B, data-centric companies like Factset, Bloomberg, Moody's, Palantir, Snowflake, and Refinitiv, who transitioned to modern tech firms. From 100 companies and 360 individuals, the key was refining our criteria, as simply finding a technology leader wasn’t enough to fulfil the role.
We worked closely with senior stakeholders, crafting effective outreach materials, using WhatsApp for communication, and holding weekly syncs. Our personalised outreach and detailed interview packs ensured transparency while sharing candidate feedback with The Economist and kept everyone aligned throughout the process.
